June 2006

Dear Reader,

Let me first of all apologize for not sending a newsletter in May. We were very busy with the project in Barcelona (of which you can read more below) and also with moving to our new office. I hope you are all doing well and hope you will have good weather if you are planning to go on holiday. If you by any chance see an aircraft parked in a corner of the airport you are flying to, please let us know. (info@aels.nl)

Best regards

Derk-Jan van Heerden

EUR Project

In cooperation with the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), the Netherlands, AELS finished a research in the field of end-of-life aircraft (ELA). The goal of the project was to determine what the effect will be of an extended producer responsibility (EPR) in the aircraft manufacturing industry. This legislation will make the producer responsible for the unavoidable disposal of the product at the end of its functional life. This kind of legislation is currently active in several industries like the automotive industry. We are very pleased with the result and, together with the EUR, we are looking into possibilities to extend this research.

Disposal KLM Boeing 737-400 finished

The disposal of the KLM Boeing 737-400 in Barcelona, Spain, is finished. With a few days hard work the aircraft was scrapped and transported to a nearby recycling facility. By clicking on the picture you can read more about this project and see some more pictures.

Second part AELS website almost finished

The second part of the AELS website, the extranet section, is almost finished. The people of Merge are now working on the last details. Companies and persons that are interested in projects executed by AELS can now register for the extranet. After they received the account details (username and password) they can enter a profile and tell us which aircraft types they are interested in. Within a few days it will be possible to communicate which each other and share files. This could, for example, be used for files with the components that are available for sale due to an upcoming dismantling.
