October, 2007
Dear Reader, Leaves are falling down, winter is coming. The heater has been turned on for the first time in the AELS office a few weeks ago. We hope you enjoy this newsletter with a hot cup of tea or coffee and maybe even hot chocolate milk. Last months AELS was busy with the transportation of a DC-9 for a new aviation shop at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The shop will be opened November 14th. Next to this AELS, in cooperation with the Erasmus Next month we will finish a next step in the development of the End-of-Life Decision Tool. The result of which will be presented during the Airline E&M Conference in Best regards, The AELS Team
The conference is now in its 3rd successful year. Following the 2007 conference which was chaired by K.M. Unni, Director of Engineering, Air India, and Hitesh Patel, VP Engineering & Maintenance, Kingfisher Airlines, the 2008 event will again bring together airline engineering & maintenance professionals from all types of airlines, along with manufacturers, maintenance providers, parts suppliers, financiers, regulatory authorities and consultants to share knowledge and discuss new developments and important issues facing the industry in the region. In addition to providing an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced industry professionals, the conference and its social functions will give delegates the chance to network and socialise with existing industry friends and new business partners. Planes@Plaza On November 14th a new aircraft shop will open up at Schiphol Plaza. Aviation enthusiasts can buy various aviation souvernirs here, such as scale models and t-shirts. Biggest eye catcher of the shop will be the DC-9 nose section, where visitors can walk through and even take a seat in the cockpit. At the entrance of the shop a DC-10 landing gear and engine are also on display. AELS assisted Schiphol in the purchase and transportation of these items, while providing key support during the rebuilding of the items towards final display.Aviation End-of-Life Legislation After 11 months a research study conducted as a master thesis study at AELS in cooperation with the Erasmus University Rotterdam was finished. The objective of this research was to study the anticipated impacts of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy on current end-of-life handling activities. This research found that when applied across Europe by the European Commission or on a global scale the EPR policy is expected to bring forward beneficial environmental, economic and social impacts.
